Bologna, my hometown, is famous worldwide for its art, culture and history heritage.
Even if it's not a big city, visiting a place so full of culture, music and good food, you never get bored!
Home to the first university in Europe, founded in 1088, and place of birth and/or home to a great number of world-known artists, writers, musicians, scientists etc, it is also renowned for its food tradition (let alone thinking about the bolognese sauce, known and used all over the world).
This walking tour, specifically designed for first-time visitors, will show you the reason why Bologna is so popular all over the world.
This private tour will start in Piazza Maggiore, the heart of the town, and will take you exploring the highlights and hidden gems of the fat, red & educated town
We'll explore Piazza Maggiore and its surroundings (City Hall, King Enzo's Palace, Neptune's Fountain and square, the Sala Borsa Public Library)
After visiting S. Petronio Church, we will walk to the Archiginnasio Library, once the seat of the oldest university of the western world, and learn about the history of a thousand years old school
Food time! We will explore the medieval alleyways of the Mercato di Mezzo to dive into the food culture of Bologna: our most iconic recipes, the best food areas of the town, what to look for in restaurant menus etc
Last, we will reach the Two Towers, the symbol of Bologna, to take a look at the most leaning tower of Italy and learn about the old towers that centuries ago made Bologna's look like a miniature New York.
Bologna, also known as the Fat City, is said to have one eating establishment every 40 people. As a born-and-raised "bolognese" I do believe this estimate is more than accurate.
So, how do you know where to get the best taste of town without missing out a munchy? That's what I am here for!
Visit with me the town's most popular food markets, experience pasta making with a real sfoglina and taste some typical food and wine selection!
You might be wondering, what exactly are we going to visit?
Well, this is a surprise as the itinerary changes according to the period of the year and vendors opening times, but here is a short overview of our itinerary
- Quadrilatero
- Mercato di Mezzo street food market
- Some of the oldest "bottegas" of Bologna
- Pasta-making short class optional and/or Herbs Market tour (depending on availability)
Your food-lover taste buds won't be disappointed (and you'll also learn a little bit of Bologna's history and culture along the way)!
Legend has it that the tagliatelle, shape-strips of pasta about a half inch wide, was invented in by Mastro Zafirano, on the occasion of the marriage of Lucrezia Borgia to the Duke of Ferrara. The cook was said to be inspired by the beautiful blond hair of the bride. Romantic, isn't it?
Another traditional story tells about the tortellini being shape as the bellybutton of Venus, the greek love goddess. How juicy!
Despite, all the exotic legends behind our fresh pasta, one thing is true: in Bologna you will never eat Spaghetti Bolognese.
Do you want to learn why? Come with me on a 3 hours journey on how to make the best handmade fresh pasta using only a rolling pin and your own hands
At the end of the class, you'll taste the results of your hard work with a nice glass of local wine.
Itinerary
You will be guided by a professional chef in the creation of 3 types of fresh pasta traditionally from Bologna (i. e. tortellini, tortelloni, tagliatelle. . . ) based on your diet's requirements (vegetarian options available. No vegan, no gluten free)
During the class, you will learn:
- The history of Emilia Romagna fresh, egg-based pasta
- Techniques for mixing the flour into the egg
- Preparation of traditional pasta sauces
- Preparation of pasta traditional filling
- Rolling the dough
- Creation of traditional pasta shapes
After "getting our hands dirty" (litterally!) we will reward ourselves by tasting our creations, with a nice glass of wine to wash it down0
